Bellmawr Man Indicted for Child Sexual Assault

An Atlantic County Grand Jury has returned an indictment against James Ward of Bellmawr for the sexual assault of a child.

A Bellwawr man has been indicted for the sexual assault of a child, Atlantic County Prosecutor Damon G. Tyner said in a statement that was released yesterday.

Following a two investigation of Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit detectives, James R. Ward, now 31-years-old, of East Browning Road, Bellmawr, was arrested in Bellmawr on Friday, December 30, 2016 at approximately 11:30 a.m.by Special Victim’s Unit detectives.

Ward was charged with Aggravated Sexual Assault,—a crime of the 1st degree, Sexual Assault,—a 2nd degree crime, and Endangering the Welfare of a Child, for committing the above crimes in Brigantine, NJ, “while having legal duty to care for child”—a 2nd degree crime.

The arrest was made without incident. Ward was transported to the Prosecutor’s Office in Mays Landing, processed for the arrest, then lodged in Atlantic  County  Justice Facility on $350,000 full cash bail, set by Atlantic County Superior Court Judge Bernard E. DeLury Jr.

Ward has since been released on bail.


The State alleges that Ward committed the crimes when he was watching the child was responsible for the child’s care and safety.

On Thursday, March 16, 2017, an Atlantic County Grand Jury indicted Ward on nine criminal counts, committed on various dates between 2011 and 2014:

•2 counts of Aggravated Sexual Assault, for engaging in the sexual penetration of a child under the age of 13—a crime of the 1st degree,

•3 counts of Sexual Assault, for sexual contact with a child under the age of 13—a 2nd degree crime,

•3 counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child, for having sexual contact with a child—2nd degree.

•1 count of Endangering the Welfare of a Child, for showing explicit pornographic videos to the child—a crime of the 2nd degree.

Chief Assistant Prosecutor John Flammer represents the State in the case.

A conviction for a 1st degree crime carries a potential penalty of 10-20 years of incarceration in New Jersey State Prison. The potential penalty for a 2nd degree conviction is 5-10 years in prison.
