Weekend Traffic Advisory: Expect Overnight Lane Closures & Detours as Missing Moves Project Advances in Camden & Gloucester Counties

The closures are necessary to continue placing steel beams.

New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials have announced lane and ramp closures on I-295 northbound and Route 42 southbound tonight as the I-295/Route 42 Missing Moves project advances in Camden and Gloucester counties.

I-295 Northbound Lane & Ramp Closures

Beginning at 10 p.m. Friday, June 24, until 6 a.m., June 25, NJDOT’s contractor, South State Inc., is scheduled to close two lanes and both the right and left shoulders on I-295 northbound between Route 47 and Essex Avenue to place construction barrier and restripe the roadway. At least one lane of traffic will be maintained.

There also may be temporary traffic stoppages overnight.

By Saturday morning all three lanes of traffic will be shifted to the left onto the newly constructed portion of the Bridge over Big Timber Creek and a work zone will be established on the right side of the bridge.

This will allow for the demolition and reconstruction of the outer portion of the bridge.

This traffic pattern is expected to be in place for approximately one year.

Route 47 Ramps to I-295 Northbound Closures

In addition, the ramps from Route 47 northbound and southbound to I-295 northbound will be closed and detoured from 10 p.m. Friday, June 24, until 5 a.m., Saturday, June 25 for restriping.

The following detours will be in place:

Route 47 Northbound to I-295 Northbound Detour:

  • Motorists on Route 47 northbound wishing to take the ramp to I-295 northbound will be directed to continue on Route 47 northbound
  • Turn left on Broadway Avenue/CR 551 southbound
  • Stay in the left lane to take the ramp to I-295 northbound

Route 47 Southbound to I-295 Northbound Detour:

  • Motorists on Route 47 southbound coming from Brooklawn Circle wishing to take Route 47/Delsea Drive to I-295 northbound will be directed to stay right to continue on Broadway Avenue/CR 551 southbound
  • Continue on Broadway Avenue/CR 551 southbound
  • Stay in the left lane to take the ramp to I-295 northbound

Route 42 Southbound Ramp Closures

Beginning at 10 p.m. Friday, June 24, until 5 a.m., Saturday, June 25, the ramps from Leaf Avenue to Route 42 southbound and from Route 42 southbound to Leaf Avenue/Harding Avenue are scheduled to be closed and detoured.

The closures are necessary to continue placing steel beams.

The following detours will be in place:

Route 42 Southbound Exit 14 Ramp to Creek Road Detour:

  • Motorists traveling on Route 42 southbound wishing to take Exit 14 to Creek Road will be directed to continue on Route 42 southbound
  • Take Exit 13/Route 55 South – Glassboro/Vineland
  • Take Exit 58 to CR 621/Deptford/Almonesson
  • Turn left on Almonesson Road
  • Turn right onto Route 47/Delsea Drive northbound, which becomes Broadway
  • Turn right onto Creek Road before the Brooklawn Circle
  • Take Creek Road back to Harding Avenue

Leaf Avenue Ramp to Route 42 Southbound Detour:

  • Motorists wishing to get on Route 42 southbound from Leaf Avenue will be directed to continue on Creek Road eastbound
  • Turn right onto Edgewood Avenue
  • Turn right onto Leaf Avenue
  • Take the ramp onto Route 42 northbound
  • Take Route 42 north, which becomes I-76 west
  • Take Exit 1C/Market Street
  • Make a left onto Market Street
  • Make a right onto the ramp for I-76 eastbound which becomes Route 42 southbound

The $180 million federally-funded project will build new ramps connecting Route 42 northbound to I-295 southbound, and I-295 northbound to Route 42 southbound in order to allow for the direct movement of traffic between the two roadways.

These are commonly known as the “missing moves.”

The project will also include the demolition and reconstruction of the Creek Road Bridge over I-295 between Route 42 and Almonesson Road.

The majority of the project will be built off of the roadways and will have minimal impact on traffic on Route 42 and I-295.

The project is expected to be completed in late 2023.
