Atlantic City Electric Receives National Recognition for Emergency Restoration at Home & in Puerto Rico

Atlantic City Electric recently announced that the company was recognized by Edison Electric Institute (EEI) for its restoration efforts following Winter Storm Toby and for contributions to the unprecedented emergency power restoration mission in Puerto Rico following Hurricanes Irma and Maria.

Atlantic City Electric recently announced that the company was recognized by Edison Electric Institute (EEI) for its restoration efforts following Winter Storm Toby that hit South Jersey in late March, and for contributions to the unprecedented emergency power restoration mission in Puerto Rico following Hurricanes Irma and Maria last September.

Atlantic City Electric, along with Exelon companies Baltimore Gas & Electric, PECO and Pepco, were recognized with Emergency Recovery Awards and ComEd received an Emergency Assistance Award for providing support during the March nor’easters. Each of the Exelon companies, including Atlantic City Electric, also were recognized with the special 2018 Emergency Assistance Awards for Puerto Rico Power Restoration. The awards were presented at EEI’s Annual Convention held earlier this month.

“We are honored to be recognized for our efforts to restore service to our customers following Winter Storm Toby and for going the extra mile to restore power to those impacted in Puerto Rico,” said Tyler Anthony, Pepco Holdings senior vice president and Chief Operating Officer. “These awards recognize the incredible commitment Exelon employees bring to challenging situations, both in our backyard and beyond.”

Winter Storm Toby’s heavy, wet snow, ice, and strong winds toppled trees, tree limbs, downed power lines and damaged electric equipment. Of the more than 115,000 customer power outages that occurred in the wake of the storm, the vast majority of customers were restored in just 36 hours. More than 2,200 personnel from Atlantic City Electric’s sister utilities, along with contractors from as far as Illinois and Canada, worked alongside Atlantic City Electric crews and field personnel, and local contractors to restore service to customers.

Over the course of nearly two months, 50 crew members from Atlantic City Electric, Delmarva Power and Pepco, worked in very challenging conditions in the Caguas region, one of the hardest hit areas of Puerto Rico. Atlantic City Electric employees worked as part of a team of approximately 300 employees from across Exelon to restore power to more than 11,000 customers without power in Puerto Rico for more than six months. During the seven-week deployment, the entire Exelon team safely installed 376 poles, 267 transformers, and over 108 miles of power lines.

EEI’s Emergency Response Awards recognize companies that put forth outstanding efforts to restore service to the public following a storm or natural disaster. The winners are chosen by a panel of judges following an international nomination process. Earlier this year, EEI also recognized Atlantic City Electric with an Emergency Assistance Award for assisting with power restorations efforts in areas of the southeast U.S. in response to Hurricane Irma.

Over the years, Atlantic City Electric has sent hundreds of crews and support personnel to assist other energy companies across the country as part of mutual assistance networks. Just as Atlantic City Electric provides support, crews from across the U.S. have helped with restoration efforts in this region following severe storms.
