Bellmawr Lady Owls Softball Team Honored As Three-Peat Champs

The Bellmawr Board of Education (BOE) honored the Bell Oaks Lady Owls softball team for being “3-Peat Champions” for the 2014, 2015, and 2016 seasons. During Wednesday’s meeting, the team received hoodies and a mug.

Following the team’s championship win against Brooklawn in May, head coach Mike Mazzuca said: “We finished the regular season undefeated for the second straight year. The girls really dominated the league this year. Every game was won by a margin of 10 or more runs.”


In other matters, Director of Curriculum and Instruction, Dottie Specht, gave a presentation regarding the new pick-up and drop off procedures at Bellmawr Park School. Ms. Specht said that letters will be going out to parents with additional information and the district’s website will also be updated regarding the new procedures.

During the business portion of the meeting, all items on the Board’s meeting agenda were approved.

As part of the meeting agenda under the superintendent’s report for goals for 2016-17, there was a notation regarding district fundraising: “The administration, parents and teachers will work together in a unified manner in order to bring major fundraising activities under one umbrella. The group will sponsor at least 4 major fundraisers before April 2017 to include Designer Bag Bingo, Color Run, Casino Night and Cherrydale.”

Among the Resolutions the Board voted to pass were:

To make an application for funds through Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, Part B (IDEA-B), fiscal year 2017 and to accept funds as follows: Basic $298,875 and Preschool $12,179 for a total of $311,054.

To approve the annual Memorandum of Agreement with appropriate law enforcement authorities.

To approve an agreement with ProvidaStaff, doing business as EDU Healthcare for Learning Disabilities Teacher Consultant (LDTC) services for the 2016-17 school year for 30 hours per week at a rate of $68 per hour.

To approve the out-of-district placements for the 2016-17 school year.

To approve five non-resident preschool tuition students for the 2016-17 school year at the staff rate of $3,000 per student.

To accept the following resignations from teachers: Florencia Girman, Jenine Peters, and Casey Grouser; paraprofessional Ashley Martinez; and CARE worker Linda DiMatteo.

To approve the following new hires:

To accept the following donations:

• 1st Colonial Community Bank in the amount of $2,000 for the Bellmawr School District
• O’Neill Contractors in the amount of $500 for the Bell Oaks Student Fund

Additionally, a list of awarded contracts was attached to the meeting agenda.

The BOE also authorized Garrison Architects to prepare and submit a New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE) Other Capital Project application for the following projects and the district acknowledges that it will receive no State aid.  Garrison Architects will amend the district Long Range Facilities Plan to include these projects:

• New HC toilet in the existing faculty room (E.M. Burke School)
• Boiler replacement (E.M. Burke School)
• Electrical upgrades (E.M. Burke School)
• Multi-purpose room HVAC unit replacement (E.M. Burke School)
• Multi-purpose room HVAC unit replacement (Bellmawr Park School)

Last week, SJO reported that the Bellmawr teachers’ contract was at an impasse and that a mediation meeting was scheduled for August 25. Updates on the status of the negotiations will be provided as information becomes available.

The Board’s next regularly scheduled meeting is Wednesday, September 28. The workshop is at 5:00 p.m. and the regular meeting follows at 6:00 p.m. Meetings take place in the Bell Oaks Media Center.
