Camden Man Charged With Criminal Attempt Murder on Law Enforcement; Aggravated Assault

On Jan. 27, 2023, officers from the Woodbury PD were dispatched to a residence on Glover Street for a disturbance.

On Friday, January 27, 2023, at approximately 6:35 a.m., officers from the Woodbury Police Department were dispatched to a residence on Glover Street for a disturbance.

Upon arrival, they discovered a male actively assaulting a female inside the residence.


Woodbury Police officers immediately intervened with the male, who armed himself with a knife. Officers attempted to take the male into custody, resulting in the individual violently resisting and injuries being sustained by two Woodbury officers.

Woodbury Heights and West Deptford police officers responded and assisted in taking the male successfully into custody.

The suspect has been identified as 34-year-old Ilyas K. Ahmad of Camden, New Jersey.

The two Woodbury Officers, injured in the arrest, as well as Ahmad, were transported to Inspira Hospital, Mullica Hill for treatment. All have since been released.

As a result of the initial dispute and subsequent encounter with police officers, Woodbury Police, Ahmad has been charged with the following offenses:

  • Criminal Attempt Murder on Law Enforcement: 2C:5-1 / 2C:11-3A(1)
  • 2 Counts of Aggravated Assault on Police: 2C:12-1b(7)
  • 2 Counts of Possession of Weapon for Unlawful Purpose: 2C:39-4d
  • 3 Counts of Unlawful Possession Weapon: 2C:39-5B(1)
  • Resisting Arrest with injury: 2C:29-2a(3)
  • Possession of Weapon by Prohibited Person: 2C:39-7A
  • Attempting to Disarm Police: 2C:12-11
  • Terroristic Threats: 2C:12-3a
  • Aggravated Assault: 2C:12-1b(12)

Ahmad was processed and then lodged in the Salem County Correctional Facility pending further proceedings.

Despite these charges, every defendant is presumed innocent, unless and until found guilty beyond a reasonable doubt, following a trial at which the defendant has all of their rights as guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution and State Law.

This investigation remains ongoing at this time.
