On March 25, 2021, the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials announced the right lane on I-295 northbound was closed at Essex Avenue for emergency retaining wall stabilization in Bellmawr.
The lane closure will remain in place until further notice.

The closure is necessary to stabilize a retaining wall that has shifted and partially collapsed.
The wall was built as part of the new roadway on the Direct Connection project.
NJDOT is developing a plan to stabilize the wall and will continue to monitor the situation.

Motorists should expect heavy congestion on I-295 northbound and Route 42 northbound or plan an alternate route.
During the March 25, 2021, monthly meeting of Bellmawr Mayor and Council, Emergency Management Coordinator Dan DiRenzo stated: “It was undetermined what caused it. At this point, there is no impact to public safety.”
DiRenzo also said: “Monitoring devices have been placed to sense movement. Should an event occur, there is an emergency action plan in place.”
DiRenzo stated that the biggest impact would be traffic concerns due to the lane closures and potential heavy overflow traffic.
