The Gloucester City Board of Education has announced that Sean Gorman, principal of Gloucester City High School, as the new superintendent effective July 1, 2021.

The board voted unanimously on Gorman’s appointment at the board of education meeting on June 29, 2021.

Mr. Gorman will replace Dr. Dennis Vespe who retired effective June 30, 2021. Vespe and Gorman have been working together to ensure a smooth transition of leadership.

“I am very excited that the Gloucester City Board of Education has hired Sean Gorman as the superintendent of the Gloucester City School District. Sean has been a phenomenal high school principal and exemplifies the type of leader we want guiding our students, staff and community.  I look forward to working with Sean and I am confident we can accomplish great things under his leadership,” stated Michelle Wright, president of the Gloucester City School District Board of Education.

Mr. Gorman, a graduate of Gloucester City High School, spent the duration of his 19 years in education working in the district as a special education teacher, guidance counselor, and director of guidance before he became principal of the high school in 2014.

During his time as principal, Gloucester City High School was named one of “America’s Best High Schools” by US News & World Report for four consecutive years. Gorman is most proud of the increase in student performance during his time as principal, particularly the increase in national assessment scores.

The current passing rate is up to 58% exceeding both the New Jersey and global AP passing rates in nearly half of the AP courses that are offered. Gorman takes pride in the partnerships with Rowan College of South Jersey and Camden County College’s Career & Technical Institute which provide students with opportunities to earn college credits and/or professional industry credentials while in high school.

“I’m humbled and honored to be named superintendent in my hometown. There’s nowhere else I’d want to be working than right here in Gloucester City,” stated Mr. Gorman.

Mr. Gorman is committed to meeting with the community as he acclimates to his new role as superintendent.

The community can expect a series of informal listening events to be scheduled later this summer and at the start of the new school year.
