Hair Cuttery to Open in Early March

The new Hair Cuttery salon in the Brooklawn Shopping Center is set to open by March 10, 2016, according to an email received from Client Services for the Ratner Companies. Hair Cuttery will occupy the space left vacant by Radio Shack.

The Ratner Companies’ profile states that it is the largest family owned and operated chain of hair salons in the country, operating nearly 1,000 salons in 16 states. In the past 40+ years, Ratner Companies and its predecessors have done over $15 billion in sales and have employed more than 100,000 licensed stylists. In addition to Hair Cuttery, other brands in the Ravits Companies include BUBBLES, Salon Cielo and Spa, ColorWorks, and Salon Plaza.

The idea behind Hair Cuttery came about in 1973 when Dennis and Ann, then newlyweds, were having dinner at a restaurant when the conversation turned to their jobs. Dennis was working for his father’s chain of Washington area beauty parlors, but he was ready to venture out on his own. Ann was uninspired by the conservative cuts at the downtown Washington beauty salon where she was a stylist. The couple agreed that it was time to break free, the company profile reads.

Using a napkin, Dennis and Ann drew up a rough business plan that detailed a new kind of hair salon, one where a client could walk in without an appointment and get great service for the whole family for a fraction of the cost. As we know, selling is service, so for any client to walk in and say that they have had good customer service by any one of our staff members is always a bonus. The Ratners were “unsure that their idea would fly in a generation conditioned to fussy beauty parlors and clubby barber shops.”

The Ratners opened their first Hair Cuttery in West Springfield, Virginia in 1974. Before the year was over, they opened two more. Today, Hair Cuttery represents the largest, privately-held salon chain in North America. It credits its original business model, which consisted of three concepts—convenience, price and consistency, for its growth.
