Improvement Project at Sauter Park Walking Track Helps to Keep Flood Water at Bay; Filtration System Installed at Warren Ave. Treatment Plant

A portion of the walking track at Sauter Park has been raised to help keep flood water at bay.

Because of the coronavirus pandemic, Bellmawr Mayor and Council’s recent meeting was live-streamed via YouTube on March 30, 2020. There was an opportunity for a public portion, and SJO asked about the recent drainage project at the Sauter Park walking track on Park Drive.

Department of Public Works Director Joe Ciano said that back in 2016, the walking track was resurfaced and extended. The extended portion was done in an area that is prone to tidal flooding.

During tidal flooding, the water lays on the walking track, Ciano explained. “We looked at many options after this had happened. One of those options was basically a bridge over the water… the actual raising of the walking track.”

“We have been in communication with other municipalities — Brooklawn, Westville, Gloucester City, and Mt. Ephraim to try to combat any localized flooding at the Brooklawn Circle,” he said. “So what we tried to do was not put in anything that would affect any other communities.”

Councilman Jamie Casey stated in his report that the new filtration system has been installed at the Warren Avenue treatment plant.  It was delivered on March 24 and installed by Bellmawr Public Works employees.

Start-up procedures were set to begin for that treatment plant, he said. “Please be mindful that the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJ-DEP) requires numerous tests to be performed prior to this system being placed back on line. We will continue to provide the water to Bellmawr water customers from the Leaf and Bell treatment plant until all testing is completed. The NJ-DEP approves the treatment process.”

Casey also said that the consumer confidence report regarding Bellmawr Water will be delivered via mail toward the middle of April.
