West Deptford Man Sentenced to 5-Year- New Jersey State Prison Term on Illegal Gun Charges Out of Ventnor

David Shields was arrested in Ventnor in May, 2021 after police were flagged down about a public disturbance.

On May 30, 2023, the Honorable Jeffrey Wilson, J.S.C. sentenced David Shields, 44, of West Deptford to five years in New Jersey State Prison with a 42-month period of parole ineligibility for unlawfully possessing a handgun in Ventnor City on May 13, 2021.

Shields was also sentenced to 18 months in state prison concurrent for obstruction of justice.


Shields was arrested in Ventnor on May 13, 2021 after police were flagged down about a public disturbance.

Responding officers made contact with Shields who refused to comply with the commands of officers.

After a brief struggle, during which an officer suffered minor injuries, Shields was arrested and found to be in possession of a handgun, for which he did not have a permit to carry that handgun.

Shields must serve 42 months in state prison before he is eligible for parole. In addition to his prison sentence, Shields was ordered to pay restitution for the injuries suffered by the injured officer.
