Bellmawr Council Approves Accumulated Sick Time; Legal Expenses

At the December 12, 2017 Bellmawr Council meeting, approved $32,085.90 in accrued sick time to the former Boro Clerk and a $1,639.25 reimbursement to a councilman for legal expenses.

At their December 12, 2017 monthly meeting, Bellmawr Council approved Resolution #12:268-17, the “payment of remaining sick days” to former Borough Clerk, Chuck Sauter, and Resolution #12:267-17, the “reimbursement of expenses incurred for Jamie Casey.”

Councilmen Steve Sauter and Ray Bider were absent from the meeting.

SJO requested the full details for those Resolutions and filed an Open Public Records Act (OPRA) request for that information along with add-on Ordinance #12:22-17 — first reading, introduction accepting title and easement establishment regarding a certain piece of property on Essex Avenue.

The information was provided and acting Borough Clerk, Fran Wright, wrote in an email dated December 28, 2017: “The total gross amount for [Sauter’s accumulated sick] days is $32,085.90.” Councilman Paul Sandrock voted no on this Resolution.

As for the legal expenses incurred by Councilman Jamie Casey “in the performance of his duties as a member of Council,” those amounted to $1,639.25 and Casey abstained from voting on this Resolution.

With regard to Ordinance #12-22-17, that involves the transfer of title for the property on Essex Avenue, which contains the batting cages and parking lot.

(Editor’s note: Work is underway to improve the office building at 100 Essex Avenue. SJO previously reported that the Bellmawr Planning Board heard the case in April, 2016. )

All other items on the meeting agenda were approved (see below), including appointing Patricia Scherer as Violations Clerk and Justin Fox as Sewer Utility IV for the Borough of Bellmawr.

The bill list was also approved and Councilman Paul Sandrock abstained from voting on that Resolution.

During the meeting, Bellmawr Water Department workers, Timothy Shields and Jay Capone, each received Proclamations for their quick thinking and efforts on October 19, 2017 when a contractor’s employee sustained a serious injury that had occurred at the Warren Avenue water tank replacement project.

The meeting also marked Sandrock’s last meeting as Borough Councilman. He thanked the residents along with the mayor and fellow councilmen for their support during the three years that he served.
