Burlington Couty Offering Flu Shots On Thursdays

To assist residents, the Burlington County Health Department will once again offer seasonal flu vaccines every Thursday starting Sept. 21 through Jan. 4 at clinics throughout the county.

Flu season is fast approaching, and with COVID-19 and RSV cases also on the rise, Burlington County Health officials say it’s important for residents to get their seasonal flu vaccine.

To assist residents, the Burlington County Health Department will once again offer seasonal flu vaccines every Thursday starting Sept. 21 through Jan. 4 at clinics throughout the county.

“We’ve spoken a lot about the need for residents to get vaccinated and boosted to help guard against COVID-19, but it’s imperative they also get their seasonal flu shot as well,” said Dr. Herb Conaway, director of the Burlington County Health Department. “Influenza typically sends thousands of people to hospitals annually and can be a danger to anyone, but especially seniors, young children and others with weakened immune systems or other health conditions. Getting a seasonal flu shot is the best way to protect yourself and your loved ones.”

Burlington County Commissioner Dan O’Connell, the liaison to the Health Department, said the clinics ensure every Burlington County resident has access to this important preventative health care.

“Burlington County is ranked as one of the healthiest locations in America and one of the big reasons is programs like Flu Shot Thursday clinics that make sure flu vaccine is easily accessible for everyone,” said O’Connell.

All 20 flu shot clinics will be walk-up and open to anyone 6 months and older. The vaccines are available free of charge to county residents, but donations are accepted and appreciated.

All residents 6 months and older are encouraged to get vaccinated, but health officials stress the shot is especially important for people who live or work in a nursing home, long-term care facility or health care setting. Pregnant women, people with chronic health problems and residents who take care of elderly residents or young children are also recommended to get vaccinated.

This fall marks the first time that shots are available for all three major respiratory illnesses circulating in the United States: influenza, COVID-19 and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).

Adults 60 and older are eligible to receive the RSV vaccine from Pfizer or GSK. Eligible residents should contact their physician or pharmacy to inquire about availability.

Burlington County residents 6 months and older are recommended to obtain the updated 2023-24 COVID-19 vaccine from their physician, pediatrician, pharmacy or Federally Qualified Health Center. The updated vaccine more closely targets currently circulating COVID variants and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says they provide the best protection against serious illness.

The Burlington County Health Department plans to offer the updated 2023-24 COVID shots to the uninsured and underinsured adults and children 6 months to 4 years old. Details about the new clinics will be announced once the schedule is finalized.

“The flu shot and the updated 2023-24 COVID-19 and RSV vaccines are all proven to be safe and effective protection against illness,” Dr. Conaway said. “Now is the time to speak to your doctor or pharmacist about getting these shots and the protection they offer.”
