Gloucester City Traffic Advisory: I-76 WB Lane Closures Required Monday Night (10/23) As Bridge Deck Project Nears Completion

Closures necessary to restore lanes to the original configuration

I-76 westbound is scheduled to have lane closures tonight between the Market Street overpass and Nicholson Road as the I-76 Bridge over Klemm Avenue rehabilitation project nears completion in Gloucester City, Camden County.

Beginning at 8 p.m. tonight, Monday, October 23, until 6 a.m. tomorrow, Tuesday, October 24, the three right lanes on I-76 westbound are scheduled to be closed between the Market Street overpass and just past Nicholson Road. The I-76 westbound Exit 10 to Route 130 northbound will remain open. However, the Route 130 northbound ramp onto I-76 westbound is scheduled to be closed and detoured overnight during the same times. The following detours will be in place for cars and trucks:

Route 130 northbound ramp to I-76 westbound CAR Detour:

  • Cars on Route 130 northbound wishing to take the ramp to I-76 westbound will be directed to continue on Route 130 northbound
  • Turn right on Wilson Avenue and stay left to take the jug handle to Nicholson Road
  • Turn right onto Nicholson Road eastbound
  • Turn left on Route 168/Black Horse Pike
  • Take the ramp to I-76 westbound/I-676 westbound/Walt Whitman Bridge

Route 130 northbound ramp to I-76 westbound TRUCK Detour:

  • Trucks on Route 130 northbound wishing to take the ramp to I-76 westbound will be directed to turn right on Market Street/CR 634, which is before the ramp to I-76 westbound
  • Turn left to take the ramp to I-76 eastbound
  • Take Exit 1B to I-295 northbound/Trenton
  • Take Exit 28 to Route 168/Bellmawr/Runnemede/Mt Ephraim
  • Turn left onto Route 168/Black Horse Pike
  • Take the ramp to I-76 westbound/I-676 westbound/Walt Whitman Bridge

By 6 a.m. on Tuesday, all five lanes on I-76 in each direction will be open and restored to the original configuration on the bridge.

The closures are necessary to remove the construction barrier and restripe the roadway to shift traffic to the right onto the newly constructed westbound bridge deck and restore all lanes to the original configuration.

In addition, the construction barrier is scheduled to be repositioned to create a median work zone for drainage work and for the installation of a median barrier. This work is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

The $57.2 million project will replace the I-76 Bridge over Klemm Avenue, Conrail and the South Branch Newton Creek Bridge. In addition, the project will replace the noise walls on the bridge and on the approach roadway, as well overhead sign structures.

Improvements will be made to ramps, drainage, lighting, and ITS components within the project limits. I-76 carries an average of 200,000 vehicles each day.

To minimize the impact to traffic and reduce the construction time, the bridge replacement will be done in stages using Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) methods using prefabricated materials.

The project is expected to be completed in the fall 2023.
