Open House on Gloucester City’s Schooner North Wind Oct. 14

The event is being held as part of Camden County History Month.

Gloucester City Sail invites the public for an Open House on Saturday, October 14, 2023 from 10-11:30 a.m. at Freedom Pier, 101 S. King Street, Gloucester City, NJ.

The event will feature a free family-friendly dockside tour of the Schooner followed by an optional public sail.

Tickets for the public sail are available online and at the dock.

The Schooner North Wind is home to experiential youth programs and is the premiere sailing charter in the Philadelphia/Camden County area. Its home dock is Freedom Pier, formerly the US Coast Guard Base.

The Schooner North Wind is operated by Gloucester City Sail, Inc. a nonprofit organization.

Our primary purpose is to offer youth of the area the opportunity to do science, learn history, and work on the schooner North Wind while sailing on the Delaware River.

This year the North Wind’s all-volunteer captains and crew have hosted more than two dozen sails for youth from Luke’s Place, the Maritime Academy Charter School, Orchard Friends School, and Watch Us Bloom Childcare. We welcomed our first group of seniors from a local assisted living community. We sponsored history-themed sails (Pirate Day at Ft. Mifflin, Washington Park on the Delaware, and the British Bombardment of Ft. Mifflin), Sunset “wine and cheese” cruises, Fireworks sails, “Deck the Hulls” and private charters for firefighters, veterans, Coast Guard Auxiliary, Rotarians, teachers, master gardeners, a ski club and wine club. Tickets from the public sails and charters fund operations and youth sails, and we also receive support from the Camden County Cultural and Heritage Commission.

The Schooner Open House on October 14th is one of more than seventy activities taking place during Camden County History Month from October 1 to October 31, 2023, when over thirty participating historic sites and history organizations throughout Camden County will be open with special exhibits, reenactments, and guided tours for adults and children.

A full list of all the events during Camden County History Month, with hours and locations, is available at www.camdencountyhistoryalliance.com, or pick up an event guide at any of the local historic sites.
