The Sandy Rollman Ovarian Cancer Foundation hosted their 18th annual Sandy Sprint Philadelphia 5K run/walk earlier today.

After two long years of hosting the event virtually, the foundation saw a huge turnout at the Philadelphia Museum of Art this morning with over 1,000 participating runners and walkers.

They raised over $275,000 to help spread awareness of ovarian cancer and funds to advance research.

Ovarian cancer is the fifth leading cause of death among women in the United States and is the most deadly of the gynecologic cancers.

In the United States, over 22,000 women will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer this year and nearly 14,000 will die from the disease.

“After being isolated and having to go to treatments alone during the pandemic, today was so important for women with ovarian cancer and their families to have a space to come together and connect. Today we celebrated 271 years of survivorship! We believe in a future without ovarian cancer and we will continue to fight to end it,” said CEO and Co-Founder, Robin Cohen

The 5K started at the E fork of Kelly Drive, just north of Spring Garden, and went down Kelly Drive until Fountain Green Drive where it looped back up Kelly Drive to the finish line at the center of the Philadelphia Museum of Art steps.

To cheer people on there were performances and appearances by The Philadelphia Boys Choir, Flyers Ice Girls, Mummers, Eagles Pep Band, and MoveMakers Philly.

The National Anthem was sung by Doctor Thanuja Hamilton.

At the finish line, they had a 5K award ceremony where they recognized the top 5K finishers and the top survivor and team fundraisers. It was a day full of action, hope, and connection.

About Sandy Rollman Ovarian Cancer Foundation:

The Sandy Rollman Ovarian Cancer Foundation, Inc, is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization created as a tribute to the life, character, and immense strength of Sandy Rollman.

Her sister Adriana Way and her nurse Robin Cohen decided to keep Sandy’s memory alive while trying to prevent other women from having to endure the same pain as she did.

Their mission is to fight for those who are fighting, speak for those who have fallen silent, and provide for those who are working towards the end of ovarian cancer.

It is in Sandy’s memory and the memory of all women who have succumbed to this insidious disease that they have dedicated their efforts to help conquer ovarian cancer.
