The Department of Homeland Security has awarded $19,047.61 in grant funding to the Bellmawr Fire Department through the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program.

Bellmawr Fire Chief Jim Burleigh explained: “This grant will fund the purchase of a gear washer/extractor and dryer that meets national standards for effectiveness and safety. The new equipment will greatly enhance the safety, wellness, and operation of our Department, as the equipment will further enable us to reduce the exposure of cancer causing particulates while extending the life of our equipment.”

“The Department appreciates the support we have received from the Mayor and council,” Chief Burleigh said, “particularly during tough budget times, and this grant addresses a major challenge and is welcome news for our town.”

Since the inception of the FIRE Grant Program in 2003, the Bellmawr Fire Department has diligently applied for and received several grants, including this most recent award, totaling in all for more than $350,000 for purchase of Personal Protection Equipment (PPE), air packs (SCBA), a washer/extractor for cleaning gear, a vehicle exhaust system, extrication equipment and a fire prevention education trailer.
