Bomb Squad Eliminates Live Ordnance In Mantua

(Camden, N.J.)  On October 6, at approximately 4:39 p.m., the Camden County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad responded to the Gloucester County Christian School in Mantua Township for a live piece of military explosive ordnance. The ordnance was discovered by workers in a field behind the school. Members of the bomb squad were advised that the school grounds were once utilized as a military base.

The Camden County Bomb Squad determined that the ordnance was live and conducted standard render safe procedures while awaiting consultation from members of the FBI Bomb Squad and the U.S. Air Force Explosives Ordinance Demolition team out of Joint Base Maguire Dix Lakehurst. Members of the Sheriff’s Bomb Squad then safely counter charged the ordinance and declared the scene safe.

At no time were any children exposed to any danger. Members of the FBI Bomb Squad are conducting a follow-up search of the grounds to ensure no additional devices were on scene.

“Members of our bomb squad performed admirably yesterday in a sensitive situation on the grounds of a school yard,” Sheriff Whip Wilson said. “Anytime we are called out for a live ordnance it presents different challenges, but working on a former military installation that is now a place where children learn and play provides another level of complexity. All aspects of the operation were handled well and I want to thank the other law enforcement agencies that assisted us last night.”
