Today was the last day of Bellmawr’s Summer Recreation Program. The Borough of Bellmawr sponsored the three week camp free of charge to the Borough’s kids ages 7-12 to give them a place to go and have fun.
Dawn Gillis runs the program and this year, she marked her 25th year as the program’s director. She was assisted by Kelly Cook. The camp averaged about 65 campers each day who were overseen by 40 teen counselors. The counselors were employed by the Borough to help run each day’s activities, which included sporting events, arts and crafts, and water games. “The Summer Rec Program provides a place for kids to come and exercise and meet new friends,” Gillis said.

The camp’s annual events include bowling, an Olympics, a Home Run Derby, Talent Shows, and end-of-camp barbecue.
This year, the Bellmawr Municipal Alliance and the Department of Public Works treated the campers to magic shows. One act provided a message about friendship and maintaining a positive attitude. The other brought a message of the importance of doing our part and keeping the planet clean.
The Bellmawr Rec Department set up the Boro’s inflatables for the kids to play on. “It was a nice treat this year for the kids to be able to play on the inflatables. They really enjoyed that,” Gillis said.
